United Families General Preventive Program

United Families (UF) is a community based program that has been empowering families since 1979. The program now provides preventive services to 195 families who reside in the Fort Green, North Crown Heights, Bedford Stuyvesant and Williamsburg Communities in Brooklyn (CD’S 1, 2, 3 & 8). The United Families participants are supported by staff that are bi-lingual and bi-cultural and are sensitive to the uniqueness of the population we serve. This creative and innovative preventive program has been empowering, safeguarding and guiding “at risk” families to overcome challenges so that they can become healthy, productive and independent.

The United Families Program provides a wide range of services utilizing the “strength based model” Our goal is to help families realize the strength they have within their family unit.  This is achieved by conducting a comprehensive assessment of our families helping them to see the area where they are strong, while helping them to build upon area when additional support is needed.  The Improved Outcomes for Children’s (IOC) model is another tool we utilize.  This model also focuses on the family strength, which is accomplished through Family Team Conferences (FTC’S).  This model provides an opportunity for our families and services providers to meet in partnership, where the focus is to empower our families, to help them build on their strength, with a goal of independence.

Further, the program offers tangible support, on going groups/workshops and recreational activities, which is made possible by the Program Enhancement Allotment we receive from the Administration for Children’s Services.
