Grandparents As Parents (GAP)

G

randparents as Parents (GAP): During a mother's incarceration or incapacitation due to substance abuse, the most common arrangement for a child is with a maternal grandmother over the age of 50.

In addition to our youth programs, we run a bi-weekly support group for grandmothers in the community which provides a safe and consistent space to discuss issues such as coping with a daughter who is incarcerated, helping children to understand the incarceration, understanding the impact of substance abuse and addiction, dealing with discipline and behavior issues, and the importance of making time for oneself.

The group has been running for over 5 years and is attended by grandmothers involved with our other programs as well as by grandparents who are foster or adoptive parents through other foster care agencies.
